Generally, a lower risk way of implementing significant change is to stage the implementation so the first portion is low risk and is implemented very quickly – followed by successive phases which are well orchestrated. The multi-generation template helps you stage the implementation of your change initiative.
The approach is depicted in the diagram below.
- List the major discrete components of your initiative. These could be items like IT modules, training, major features/functions, and platform.
- List the sub-components for each of the discrete components.
- On the right side of the template, create a description of what the ideal state will look like (nirvana).
- Finally, complete descriptions of the outcomes/milestones for each phase.
Note that the creation of these templates typically takes a day to facilitate with a team of people.
