Often, the change initiative is fuzzy in terms of what it includes and does not include. This very simple exercise helps get more clarity around the definition of the initiative. This is very important because if there is agreement on a clearly defined set of boundaries, the effort involved can be accomplished with much less wasted effort going places which will not be considered to begin with.
To do this exercise, simply draw a vertical line down the middle of a piece of paper, white board, or flip chart. Label the left side, “Includes” and the right side “Does Not Include.”
Then fill in bullet points on both sides. Note that the more the right side is filled out, the better defined the initiative will ultimately be.
Include not only the WHAT’s but also the WHO’s, HOW’s, WHEN’s, and WHERE’s.
